But first...
Yeah, this is the season premiere episode for the current (and possibly last) season of Sister Wives. But, damn...
It's the season premiere, and not one of the show's protagonists could make a short appearance on Twitter during the show?
Early Mother's Day Morning, Janelle tweeted this to her fans...
But then 12 hours later, we get this terse response from Janelle:
I just don't get it. These people seem to make "lost opportunities" into an art form. They have a "popular" reality show, but can't be bothered to live tweet with their fans. Robyn has an online store, but can't be bothered to reach out to viewers and her Twitter fanbase (the fans she hasn't blocked that is) to promote sales.
Come to think of it, when WAS the last time Robyn mentioned her online store?
And let's not forget their recent court case, in which it fell onto the shoulders of Utah polygamists to be the public face for the Brown's cause, while the Browns were doing more important "work" in Sin City, aka Las Vegas and couldn't be bothered to show their faces in a courtroom, let alone Utah without a camera present.
Just like most of the endeavors attempted by Kody and his Kodettes, the effort fell short. Way short. Not even in nice try territory.
Last season, we watched in horror as Kody told Christine she had to honor the family he created if she expected any attention or affection from him.
Harsh words...just as bad as the chile nachos incident.
But poor Meri had to deal with a double whammy of pain inflicted on her in the name of family. Her "lover" Kody was now entranced by his new legal wife. Meri was hurting, and alone, and became a prime target for an online predator, who to this day, continues to torment her publicly.
So because of the obvious trouble in paradise vibes, viewers expected the Browns to participate with their audience and live tweet.
You know, show some solidarity. Some of that Love is to be Multiplied Not Divided Shinola Kody likes to spread around.
Well, the audience was to be disappointed. The Browns were no shows at their own party.
And that's pretty bad for a Sister Wive's premiere.
For me, the defining moments of this episode was summarized in two pictures shown during Kody's monologue at the beginning of the Sister Wives premiere.
We saw Kody hugging his current legal and very pregnant wife, in front of that iconic portrait of Robyn, Kody, and his Lexis convertible that tends to travels to different walls in Robyn's bedroom. Robyn is draped around Kody, looking like she's trying to suck the ever living life out of him. Kody's, however, looks distracted, like he'd rather be someplace else.
And this guy sired 15 kids with 4 wives.
The episode should have been titled "A Tale of Two Hugs with a Lughead Sperm Donor"
Let's skip the 30 minutes or so recapping Maddie's engagement announcement and her getting the hell out of the cul-de-sac as fast as her U-Haul trailer allowed her to go. The only amazing moments from this segment was Maddie's shocking top that showed off her bra straps as well as a henna tattoo on her upper back.
Oh, and Kody's obvious budding bromance with Maddie's fiance, Caleb.
Here's Maddie's tiny rental in Montana...or was it Wyoming? Oh well...
We then had the drama of King Sol sharing a room with his yet to be born sister, The Princess Ariella. Believe it or not, the current (she's long past the newness) Mrs. Kody Brown makes sense. If you watched the snippets for each wife's McMansion on the TLC website, you'd know that the master suite is on the ground floor. There is a smaller room next to the master suite. Meri made this room into a mancave TV room for Kody. Janelle and Robyn have apparently made it into a room for their younger children. And now Robyn would like to have The Princess share with King Sol on the ground floor, thus sparing Kody's favorite wife from having to run up and down that flight of stairs.
We were then treated to what seemed like an eternity of Robyn making plans for putting The Princess (sounds so much better than the "baby sister" the Browns keep using) and King Sol in the same room. Suffice it to say The Princess will break Kody Brown tradition: She will not have her own "crib". I shudder to think of how Robyn and Kody will procreate their next spawn while The Princess is in bed with them.
But you gotta love Garrison's droll take on the whole...um....situation. Says Garrison, "This is something that will be a problem in five years from now, and that'll be Robyn's and Dad's problem. Not ours."
Yeah, you tell 'em, Garrison!
But we weren't finished with the Kody and Robyn show yet.
I need someone to explain this to me. Why oh Why do we need to see yet another glimpse of Robyn's pregnant belly? For a woman who enjoys spouting how modesty is important, blah, blah, blah, why does Robyn insist on showing off her naked pregnant belly?
Was it really necessary to have King Sol tag along with Robyn and Kody to her midwife appointment? And good gracious Kody, must you slowly turn that knife you stuck in Meri's back by repeatedly calling Robyn "Mrs Brown" during the exam? Awkward!!!
Finally, FINALLY, we get to the Catfish Fallout.
Yep Meri, you sure did let "it" into the family.
And one thing for sure, some people are naturally beautiful and don't need to wear makeup. Robyn, you are not one of those people. Wear makeup. Please. Thank you!.
Now we all know Robyn, with her cohort in crime, JYD knew way before that Parent's Day trip to Colorado that Meri was carrying on with someone on Twitter. And it's unbelievable having to listen her ask over and over in the family counseling session with the therapist to plyg stars "What have I done? What did we do? How did this happen? How in the heck did this happen? How were you in the place that you were at emotionally? How did we not see it? How did we not see it a mile away? The burning bush over here?"
Why the hell do you care? And frankly, Robyn, Meri was still hurting while you took Kody on that vacay to Hawaii. I suppose it would be difficult to see that burning bush while you were busy working on Kody's baby #15, no doubt taking up as much of Kody's time as humanly possible.
Robyn took away Meri's legal status, and Kody will never give it back to Meri. Robyn, if you need to see who the real culprits are, take your hubby by the hand and walk over to a mirror and look at yourselves for the answer.
And Kody, if you really care about Meri, and you truly believe in your religion, show us heathen monogamists that your marriage license with Robyn doesn't mean a thing. Tear it up, get a quickie divorce, heck you can use Meri's lawyer, and remarry Meri.
But we know that won't happen.
That sign should be changed to read "Somewhere along the line this family has gone terribly wrong..." |
And that's what's wrong with Sister Wives. This show has now embodied every thing anti-polygamists have warned the world about polygamy. How it strips women of their dignity. How sisterwives will one up each other to get to the top of the wive's pecking order and become the alpha wife. The number one wife. The FAVORITE WIFE.
The wife that caters to the man's every need, who puts him first, will be rewarded with attention, and favor, and in the case of the Browns, legal stature, while the other wives are lucky to get an occasionally moment of attention, who must rationalize their loneliness and jealousy as trials to be overcomed.
Sister Wives needs to wake up, and change it's direction by making it less of the Kody and Robyn Show and more about SISTER WIVES, particularly the Original Three....is that so difficult to do? Is that so hard to understand?
Is it too late for this show to be saved?
If Meri invited any predator into her home. It was Robyn! It's all gone downhill since.
ReplyDeleteBam! Isn't that the truth!
DeleteWow!!!!! This is so true!!!!!!!!
DeleteExcellent and thoughtful well written recap, thanks and thanks again!!! made my night.
ReplyDeleteI don’t think the show or the family can be salvaged. Kody is a clinical narc, and that right there is the problem. (Combine that with polygamy and misogyny and kiss any hope for domestic spiritual peace goodbye.) He will never see the validity of any opinion but his own. Narcs are very much a lost cause. He needs therapy (they all do,) but he will go to his grave with absolute certainty that he’s right in every decision. (His self-serving and condescending “apologies” don’t count for beans.)
ReplyDeleteI just realized (thanks to you,) that Robyn is the physical manifestation of the succubus. She’s been sucking the life out of that family from the beginning. It is very disturbing and telling how the mass of viewers despise her. It’s in her aura, her energy, her eyes, her voice, her expressions – she’s just a negative force. She makes me very uncomfortable, and has from the beginning. This is a woman that the other women should have kept far far far from their home. But unfortunately, polygamy does not foster emotional growth, and so none of those women were mature enough to imagine what they were up against.
BTW, did anyone else notice Robyn’s name on the May 13th Court of Appeals document? (Link – scroll down the page to see the real doc: http://fox13now.com/2016/05/13/sister-wives-polygamy-case-to-go-to-the-u-s-supreme-court/ ) She’s listed as Robyn Sullivan. Did I miss something, or didn’t she change her name to Brown as a “gift” to Kody not long ago?
If memory serves, she didn't legally change her name until after the lawsuit had been filed.
DeleteI 100% agree with you about Robyn. She is so visibly annoyed during the couch sessions when the subject involves anything but her and her children . She's mad that maddies engagement is overshadowing her pregnancy . I have no interest in watching her and Kody have another baby . Its obvious to me that TLC made more of an effort to show Kody with Truely, and him with Christine , but we all know it's not genuine . All of us viewers are saying the something , time to make the Browns go back to work and see what it means to really have to dal with reality ! BTW... Great post CJ. Did you notice how Janelle explained the cat fishing by saying "we polygamist are such trusting people "? I thought Christine said two seasons ago that polygamist didn't trust outsiders and wasn't happy that Meri would have friends who were t polygamist ..,., more lies and inconsistencies !
DeleteI find it hard to watch Robyn as well. All those twitches and every sentence out of her mouth feels painful and leaves her breathless. Has anyone else noticed the strain on her face when she speaks? I thought she would watch herself on tv and realize how annoying that finger combing and eye picking is but it seems shes gotten worse.
Deletewell done, Cynical Jinx! Very succinct. I hope the OG 3 read this!
ReplyDeletePer your remark that Robyn "can't be bothered to reach out to viewers and her Twitter fanbase to promote sales" for MySisterWife's Closet, it's a good thing for those potential investors that decided to pass on pouring more money into the business. They sure dodged a bullet. I do feel sorry for Christine's mom, who is probably sitting in the garage sewing those ridiculous handbags that seemed to have gone over like a lead balloon. There's one that actually looks like she sewed a Hefty garbage bag onto cloth, aptly named 'Throw It All In.' The worst is the one that Robyn probably designed for the wives called 'Just For Me' that has a cartoon of a lady saying "We might not be able to find him..." for when they need to grab a bag on their way out to look for Kody after he decides to leave them all in the middle of the night. Strange...
ReplyDeleteCynical you are right about the show becoming the Kody and Robin show. Kody and Robin look and act like they are monogamists now! The older wives are left with empty houses. People call Janelle the smart wife and it shows because her kids are the ones running away from that lifestyle. Garrison seems like an angry teenager maybe he's tired of his mother being treated so bad by Kody. Sister Wives has become a joke now.
ReplyDeleteAny thoughts on how Christine is able to cope? She's so openly jealous but clearly doesn't get along that well with Kody. How does someone like that cope? Hobbies?? Confused on how it's just Meri having the affair... Also speaking of Meri. What about potential STDs of the cat fish was real? That's what my therapy session would be about if I was a sister wife! Excellent recap.
ReplyDeleteIf I was Meri I would be more worried about Robyn spreading her nasty cold sores through Kody. That catfish man doesn't exist in real life anyway. Didn't Christine say she was on antidepressants after Truly was born?
DeleteWe should thank the Browns for bailing on tweeting. Their attempts to reinterpret what appears on the screen (aka "damage control") are pathetic and dishonest.
ReplyDeleteCJ, excellent recap and great insights. I had to freakin' breakdown and watch the show so that I could make relevant comments here...I don't give a flip about the show but I love the deconstruction that we do here. I am total literary nerd; even though in life, I am rhetoric/composition person....Anyway, what kills me with Robyn is her inability to stay out of the other wives' conversations. When Meri was talking about being catfished (which, btw, I feel no sympathy for her), Robyn had to draw the attention back to her by either womansplaining every single things she said or say how much this hurt her...poor me...I didn't know what to do...sure you did. You watched and were probably cracking up when you found out who Sam really was....and all the while, you prissed and pranced in front of Meri with Meri's husband all caught up in your web....Meri, Christine, Jangle....do you really think that this is how life is supposed to be? Women are supposed to be miserable? We must fight for our husband's time? Do you really think that living in jealousy, insecurity, and fear is better than how I live....Girlllll you have no idea what you are missing. The truth is that none of those ladies are very smart nor are they emotionally mature...they are stunted in high school and act like girls in high school act....I really feel bad for their kids but I don't have one bit of sympathy for them....they choose to close their eyes and live as abused women....
ReplyDeleteAmen! runKodyrun!!!
DeleteYou know, no one said in the show, "Meri, if Sam had been real, we all know you would've left." They always skim over reality and want to pretend all is hunky dory.
ReplyDeleteI only watch in hopes that one or all the women( except for Robyn she deserves Kody) decides to walk out on the narcissistic, demeaning, self serving man they call husband. None of these women are role models for their children. They are teaching them to except less from someone who supposedly loves you or give less ! Either way these mothers need to take a hard look at there supposedly close family
ReplyDeleteAnd look at the reality . All of the children are in jeopardy of living sad lives because even the ones who do not believe in polygamy ways still will have the stink of despair, desperation and low self esteem because they watched their mothers let Kody use and abuse them!
Great review, CJ !!
ReplyDeleteYou always manage to spotlight the major absurdities with a surgeon's scalpel.
Deliberate and incisive.
Agree with all who say with no hesitation that these women will stay in their pathetic plyg quicksand with Kody, however miserable and despondent that choice makes them. The original three, especially, are sunk up to their necks.
They either "like" the misery or they are delusional to reality. Scary and sad either way!
Since it began their show has provided a stark blueprint for viewers to see a disturbing world for the women who choose to live it.. And against all logic and unfathomable denial of the humiliation and veiled abuse they have allowed to be filmed, they still continue to use that ridiculous opener where they proudly proclaim their husband-sharing life is "awesome" and makes life "better."
Shudder to think what other misconceptions they would fall victim to.
Oh, wait.......we already do know a few.
From the very beginning, Sobbin most definitely has preyed on whatever core unit had been established by Kody and the first three. She has the mentality and demeanor of a covert adolescent "mean girl."
She whines and sighs and sulks to drive attention away from others back to herself. Her facial expressions say it all.
Meanwhile, unbelievably, the show "showed" her journey in detail toward achieving her ultimate goal of neutralizing whatever dynamic that had been the core of what that family had been prior to her entrance. No mystery or doubt....it was all there to see, season after season, epp after epp.
Thinking back realistically, the whole show has effectively revolved around her.
What I don't get is why the need to remarry Meri? He needs to divorce Robyn and then they'll all be in the same boat on paper. Meri is married to a polygamist. The other wives weren't legal, so she shouldn't be either. And it's sickening how she and Robyn partner up against the other two. Sorry, but I think Meri is simply reaping what she has sown. If she would just own up to everything she's done over the years that was against the others, not to mentor her part in this catfishing scandal, I could definitely respect her. But, as it is, I do not.
ReplyDeleteBeing legally married to Robyn at this point has more tax advantages than being legally married to Meri. Robyn has many dependent children where Meri does not.
DeleteTax advantages? Kotex isn't concerned about taxes because if he was he would have divorced Meri long time ago and married Christine or Janelle. We all know why he divorced Meri. It was to restructure his family because Robyn made him do it!
DeleteWell Diane that is a good point
DeleteTLC is aring a show on Sun May 22, called Catching the Catfish. The description says the show will talk to experts and victims and mentions Meri
ReplyDeleteThank you so so so much for doing episode recaps! I LOVE your recaps, they absolutely make my afternoon!
ReplyDeleteCynical, such a thoughtful and insightful commentary--I thoroughly enjoyed every last morsel!!!
ReplyDeleteI could not live with the jealousy I would have if my husband took a newer and younger wife. I recall Nikki in Big Love going on about "sublimating our feelings for the greater good of the principle" blah blah blah. Way too unbalanced--no yin yang in that bloated family circumstance. It just blows me away that in the country we live in, which is full of choices, that anyone would make that choice consciously.
Robyn got lucky for herself and her kids that Meri 'found' her and that Meri was just disgruntled enough in her relationship to Kody (and had been Queen Bee of that family for so long) to roll the dice and play around and see if Kody would take the bait--"how much does he love me...will he go for it?"
To me, the success of the show is that it illustrates the downsides of polygamy so very well. It is the anti-polygamy poster child!
Like in Big Love, at first it seemed kind of okay, and then we got to know them. Like Kody remarked about dating a divorcee--"Eeeeeew!"
The World's Organization of Women thanks you Browns, and you especially, Kody, for performing this service.
"The World's Organization of Women thanks you Browns, and you especially, Kody, for performing this service."
DeleteBravo and Amen !!!
I've always doubted that Meri chose to divorce Kody. I think that decision was made for her. I also believe the decision to court Robyn as a potential fourth "wife" was also one that was made for, not by, Meri. She was simply told that this would be her new reality and handed the script where her role was to try to make the implausible plausible.
ReplyDeleteI tried but couldn't watch more than a few minutes of this season's opening episode. It was simply too painful to watch--in so many ways: depression, ignorance, emotional despair, obliviousness, Kody's scowl.
By the end of last season, I felt that I was watching a serial about a self-absorbed man who was dispensing cuddles to his new, younger wife while tolerating the existence of his three former wives in the same cul de sac "for the sake of the family." The only ex in Kody's good graces at the moment is Janelle, thanks to the potential ratings for Maddie's wedding.
KFZ (Kody-Free Zone)
I have had the ick factor since Kody said meri was his bait. You see up in Canada we had a pig Bernardo. He wanted His wife's sister. Wife drugged her sister for him to rape. Sister over dosed and died. He wanted to rape again so they kidnapped two young girls raped amd killed them. Leslie Mahaffey and Christine French were their names. Then there are pimps sending their girls out looking for new recruits.Procurement is not funny .Kody is capable of anything.. I am so happy for the girl who got away from marrying Kody.
DeleteCJ - I am pretty sure you were using sarcasm when you mentioned Maddie's shocking top, but let me just say for the rest of us... I am happy to see Maddie continuing to disavow her parents' religion by her actions, if not her words. She is marrying Caleb, who seems to be a mainstream Christian, presumably accepting his church. So she doesn't have to dress the way Kodys' wives say their religion tells them to dress. She can dress to suit herself, and she can do whatever her new church believes is ok.
ReplyDeleteThe scenes where Kody is THROWING himself at Caleb were embarrassing to watch.
ReplyDeleteThe scenes where Kody invited himself to Maddie's dinner with her best friend (against her wishes and with ownership of her time and wants) were annoying to watch.
When Kody WHINED about 'being the last to know' after Maddie's friend told a sweet story about the beginning of their relationship was INFURIATING.
When Kody continued to whine that 'what, will I be the last to know everything? When they move, when she's pregnant, whatever?!?!'...I became very glad I wasn't in the same room with him because I would have hit him with a brick and then thrown up. Everything that man says and does turns my stomach.
I can't believe someone can be on television and watch themselves (and I'm sure a narcissist like him watches all the time) and still have NO concept of how gross and obnoxious he seems.
I can't tell if he was born without shame or the gene for self reflection, or if he's suffocated it with hairspray and rogaine.
I was also annoyed when robochin mentioned she was invited earlier but was to busy....yeah so it was not a spontaeous decsion to crash the dinner, also all the moms but Meri were invited? Really wonder why she felt so checked out?
DeleteTHANK YOU for recapping again! I know it's probably painful, but I appreciate them ever so much. I have trouble actually watching the episodes myself (because of Kody induced retching or rage blackouts) so I need your quippy summary to follow along in any coherent way.
ReplyDeleteI do wonder CJ, do you struggle to understand Robyn or have you grown accustomed to her mouth full of marbles speech patterns? I turned CC on because I could not understand half of what she was saying about her nursery and her conversations with King Sol.
Side note: I know the older kids seem frustrated with Sol because of how his parents treat him, but I hope at least someone older and intelligible talks with him regularly because I can't imagine how he will sound when he's ready to start school (if Robyn is his barometer for speech).
i actually prefer not understanding half of what Robyn says. it spares me a lot of eyeball rolling. :)
Deletei honestly thought last season was so boring that it was FINALLY laid to rest forever more. but NOPE - right when i didn't think it could possibly get even more boring i was blindsided that oh yes it could w/this new episode. it was 2 hours of pure REPEAT of stuff we've already seen, heard and one before. boring deja vu to the max. they're only back this season for Maddie's wedding to be televised and i'm already falling asleep just thinking about that.
ReplyDeletethe ONLY reason to keep this going now would be to throw Robyn off her high horse and into full on shrew mode w/a new prospective wife being courted by Grody now. it would have been great to have happened when she was pregnant w/ariola so she could have the karma bitch visit like she did to Christine's last pregnancy/labor/birthing while in courting/honeymoon stage w/Kodilocks.
sorry but i won't be able to watch much of this season. *YAWN* i have better and more interesting things to do like clip my toenails and pick the lint out of my naval.
*done* before ...
Delete*navel* ugh! lol

ReplyDeleteFor me, the most telling part was listening to Meri explain how she could get caught up with such a manipulator (as if she wasn't already) and feel threatened. A) every single wife said some equivalent of "but you're tough and tough people don't get abused," which, again, they are emotionally abided by Kody and each other every day, and that's the same mentality that keeps "strong" women in abusive relationships because there is no support to get out, only shame. And b) MOST TELLING, is Kody exclaiming "you don't take that from me" and Meri replying, "we you never threaten me like that". Not "I NEVER abuse you emotionally". Just "you don't take that from me when I try." And not "you never treat me that way." But "you never treat me THAT terribly". That's the bar they've set. Not threatening physical or emotional annihilation.
I have just found this blog and have just sat here laughing my head off. It's great thanks to all !!!
ReplyDeleteCJ, you are on point with your sharp witted analysis of the Browns. So many other great insights here as well. I've been giggling the entire time!! I have one comment, the Kodettes are truly and blindly a cult following their Master. It's very very sad that for the sake of religion these particular women have found themselves in this unhappy reality that they call their lives. The show should be renamed, For the Pleasure of Kody Brown, SMH!!!
ReplyDeleteI always wondered what was wrong with this situation...I saw a lot of the things that you named that I couldn't put a finger on. Thank you for clarifying what I always thought.
ReplyDelete
