Review: Sister Wives S07Ep05 "Growing Up Polygamist" June 29, 2014

When I first watched this episode I thought, wow, we finally got a reprieve from the scripted fake saga of the Kody and his Kody-pendent© wives.

Unfortunately, after watching this episode several times I've come to the conclusion that, while this episode focused primarily on the "young adult" members of the Brown Family, it was still scripted for the show. But I wouldn't exactly call it "fake". I think if we look between the scenes, we get a better, more true view of the Brown family and the effects of growing up in the family.

Overall, the results of growing up in a plural family was not all that positive, but it certainly wasn't all negative. I'm basing my opinion on the fact that Kody wasn't present in 100% of the scenes, and Robyn's normally idiotic utterances were kept to maybe 2 or 3 sentences, total.

It was like a vacation...

First up was Logan, the first of Kody's kids to leave the nest for college. Now a college sophomore, he lives in a house with roommates Rochelle and Trevor who apparently have been a romantic couple for some time.

And it looks like Kody's demand to Janelle that she include an additional room in her McMansion so Logan could have his own room wasn't necessary. Or as Kody explains it "Logan must be doing very well in college... he comes home once in a while."

Christine further explained that while Logan "... is coming home less and less...he feels like he is completely grounded and is really enjoying college life."

Logan chose to highlight an evening of fun at home playing strip Texas Hold 'Em Poker night with a group of friends.

It was interesting that his group of "friends" showed some diversity - but was lacking blonde girls which Logan admitted were his Achille's Heel. Or as he put it "Blondes I just get in trouble...and heartbroken..."

Poor babe. So I suppose it would be no surprise that blonde girls were missing from the gathering.

Summing up Logan's segment, he:

Isn't in a serious relationship right now.

Does not want to be a polygamist, right now.

Love, including physical relationships like having sex, is up to individual choice. He says he has already kissed and dated a girl.

Next up was Logan's sister Maddie who was a high school senior when her segment was taped.

Maddie's friends all met at her house, under the watchful eyes of her mother Janelle, and little sis Savanah. And as Maddie admitted "Yes. It [was] a double date."

Maddie has decided that her group of friends would go horseback riding in the Vegas wilderness, then to the Brown's favorite Mexican food restaurant Michocan for a bite to eat.

All I have to say is the guacamole made tableside looked absolutely scrumptious!

Summing up Maddie's segment, she:

Is now glad she left Utah for Vegas because if she had stayed she would have been labeled as "that plyg kid" and wouldn't have reached high school success of being student body president.

She thinks of her bonus moms like aunts, kind of...

She was adamant in stating she will not follow her parents into polygamy.

She hopes to graduate from law school, and to be an assistant district attorney somewhere on the east coast.

She thinks it's OK to kiss a guy if you like him. It doesn't mean you have to get married.

In the couch interview, Kody found it necessary to state that he hadn't been "that involved in the dating life of my children. When they bring somebody over, I get to meet them. When they are going out with groups of friends and stuff like that,  I don't always meet them. We haven't been able to enforce our standards completely."

Whatever dude. But I think we can presume that if it isn't Kody's night at Janelle's, he won't be meeting Maddie's friends if they come over. Call me silly, but it sounds like Kody has some control issues. This isn't the 1900's ya know! And it looks like Maddie hasn't really suffered, socially speaking, from Kody's inattention to enforcing his so-called standards.

Unlike another sibling, who shall remain nameless...(and wasn't mentioned in this episode), who may have suffered socially due to the enforcement of her parents standards.

Next up was sorority girl, Aspyn, who was a freshman in college when taped.

Now, I'm not surprised that Aspyn chose to pledge a sorority rather than go through  college as an independent. For one thing, it has to be a helluva lot better having sorority sisters to experience life with instead of being a surrogate mother to your siblings because your mother can't cope with 1) being a plural wife 2) being a plural wife with 6 kids 3) being the obvious least favorite of her husband's wives and 4) being the plural wife of Kody Brown.

It's plain to see Aspyn has tasted freedom away from her family, and she likes it. Like Kody said, "She's always talking about her sorority sisters. And I feel like her real sisters, and myself, and her mother are probably completely left out."

Nice one, Daddy Dearest...

To sum up Aspyn's segment:

She feels college guys are more interested in "getting laid" so she pushes them away. She can hang out with them, but if they want to "get laid" they need to take that business somewhere else.

At this point of time Aspyn does not want sister wives.

She wants to have kids, but is not sure if she will be married in the next 10 years.

Last but not least, was high school senior Mykelti, the self-described "wild child/troubled teenager" of the Brown Bunch. She was also disobedient and boy-crazy.

Oy vey...

Unfortunately, her own mother agreed with that assessment. Beginning five years ago, Christine said she started to be " ... concerned with everything that Mykelti did in her life...She's always thought differently, has been challenging the status quo from day one. I was really worried for her."

But according to bonus mom Janelle, Mykelti made a complete turnaround in her life when she discovered her career goal to be in the fashion industry. According to Janelle "...she is so completely driven..." and even bonus mom Meri agreed that Mykelti's creative abilities were always "off the charts" and she was always extremely ambitious.

The only silent mom was Mykelti's "mentor" Robyn. A couple of seasons ago, Robyn mentioned that she had been tasked with being Mykelti's mentor, to help her through the rough times she was experiencing. Strange, that she would be so eerily silent. But she did take the time to wipe a booger from her eye and take a look at it. Thank goodness she didn't smear it on her clothes like she usually would do.

Anyway, I was not surprised to see Mykelti had the most diversity present in the friends chosen to accompany her on an outing.

Unfortunately, Mykelti did break up with her boyfriend John - you know, the guy Kody lectured to about swapping hormones. An uncomfortable moment occurred when one of Mykelti's friends asked her how she felt about the breakup but she handled the situation with a lot of mature grace.

To sum up Mykelti's segment:

In ten years she sees herself living in San Francisco, in a nice house with a bunch of adopted kids.

She does not see herself with a husband or in a relationship.

She wants to give children a good childhood, like the one she has enjoyed.

Let's take a snarky interlude, shall we?

What the heck did Kody and Christine do to their hair? It almost looked like, instead of swapping hormones, they decided to swap hair products.

And their hair came out the big losers...

And on the topic of Big Losers...

We had the continuing saga of Janelle, and her weight loss or rather her lack of weight loss.

Apparently, Janelle has been on some kind of weight loss plateau. Trainer Sean has read one self help book too many and now feels Janelle needs to climb a mountain and leave her "baggage" on the summit in order to move on with her life, and start losing weight again.

Janelle felt the name of her baggage was "procrastination". I, along with many others who watched this show, felt she should have written "FOOD"  instead.

With Trainer Sean minimally assisting her, Janelle painfully made her way up the mountain. It didn't help she wore a 25 pound vest - symbolic of the weight she carried at the start of her weight loss journey 2 years ago.

As a person who has had her share of fails in the face of climbing "mountains" I could feel Janelle's pain. And I must say I was impressed that she not only made it to the top eventually, she apparently was able to make it back down without having to call the mountain rescue squad.

The only part I didn't like was Janelle swapping heaven knows what when she took a swig from Trainer Sean's water bottle.

YUCK....

Finally, we got the announcement that we knew was going to happen (damn Twitter!!).

Yep, the Browns are going on a ROAD TRIP!!! Along the "iconic" Route 66!

Boy, that sounds like SO MUCH FUN!!!

Some notable pictures:

What the heck is Robyn staring at up there?

For some reason, Robyn felt it necessary to be staring at her ceiling while Kody broke the news to the family about the trip.

What struck me most about this scene was Kody's body language leaning away from Robyn, with Robyn's staring almost as if the film crew were dangling King Sol from the second floor.

Gwennie certainly has grown, hasn't she?

The look on Gwendolyn's face as her mother went on and on about traveling for four days along the old route 66 was absolutely PRICELESS!

Needless to say, many of the boys were not pleased to find out they would be forfeiting their spring break for this trip.

I have a feeling this picture sums up the "mixed emotions" of this road trip...

I can't wait to see it!

UPDATE 7/5/14

I just watched the clip someone provided yesterday....

I simply can't wait to see this trip unfold! For your convenience and viewing pleasure...

  1. As always, great review c.j. Thanks for all the hard work pulling this together.

  2. Awesome. With these reviews I don't need to watch the show. You're doing the world a greater service with these!

I wonder if Janelle's 'procrastination' is just another way of saying 'I have not been working out except for when the cameras come by'.

  3. Robyn looks like she's giving one of the youngun's the old "mom" stare. You know, the one ya get when you're doing something you're not supposed to but she can't yell at ya because of the guests in da house! :)

    1. But all her kids were downstairs sitting on the couch. In fact, I think all the kids still living at home were on the couch during that segment. You just never know with Robyn.

    2. I think Robyn realized that KoDouche wasn't telling everyone to support her and her dream, so she could give a fuck less what he was actually saying. Not about her = not im-por-unnnn.

    3. Not Im-por-un!! LOL

Maybe she was watching the light pour past her eye booger...staring at the shadow it made?

  4. What are these women holding back? Their faces speak volumes about their attitude towards the situation they are living with. I guess the mcmansions on the cul de sac did not cure the unhappiness. Meri is just pathetic looking and sour. They know keeping it together is how the checks keep comming, but this is just sad.

  5. I think Robyn's sudden rebellious looking behaviors stem from the end of the honey moon, the lack of new fertilization going on, the lack of respect for her "creative urges", and the lack of history with the family. Meri, Janelle, and Christine can, with a limited amount of authority, really discuss the history of all of Kody's kids but Robyn has nothing to relate in terms of how the children were, how they are now, and what happened in between. I imagine that this lack of authority also hurts her credibility with the older kids because they grew up without her in their lives and they may even see her as a huge interruption, maybe even blaming her for problems that have occurred since she entered the family. So she rolls her eyes, looks at the ceiling, snarks, picks eye boogers, and snarks when she can. I remember a time when Christine said that Robyn brought a certain cool factor to their lives and even that seemed a little passive aggressive right up there with Janelle or Meri saying that they get that he needs a younger model or however they said it. While I don't like Robyn and believe she is incredibly rude, insensitive, and destructive, I cannot help but feel sorry for her. Her life has been one huge disappointment starting with her parent's divorce, her own failed marriage, and now her entrance into a family that was already established...she seems to be the outsider and will probably always be seen as an intruder. The little tweeting games that Meri and Robyn play when Kody is spending the night away reflects that little bit of immaturity and lower self esteem. I really wish they would be honest and tell it the way it is and how they feel. If they wanted to increase ratings and allow us to relate to them, it would be nice to say, okay, it sucks being them but they can still teach us something about human nature or about our own selves. Sadly, the women and Kody are so determined to make monogamist look bad and less than that they create a lie and on camera live lie. I remind myself that they don't have an idea of what our benefits are, or how we feel. The kids, even when they are not being forthright, are still much more entertaining that the parents.

    2. When Kody is spending the night with another wife, Robyn tweets going to be another sleepless night or time to take a trip. I would have to go back through their tweets but it is clear that from their tweets they are not happy about being alone and sometimes they seem to be attempting to worry Kody. I will go back through and see if I can find some.

    3. All of Meri's strong/epic women tweets are so sad. Girlfriend you are married to a man with 3 mistresses and follow a religion that says your husband holds the key to your eternal salvation! Get outta here with that "Independent, Strong, and Daring to Live!" twitter bio.

    4. Meri kills me because out of the all the wives I think she'd have the most going for her if she wasn't hooked up with the loser Kody and this mess of a family. You know she wants to go, she's said she only stays because of Mariah and wanted to leave about 7 years ago but didn't. She grew up with this lifestyle and has been brainwashed to think that Kody holds the key to her salvation. And you know she has her dumb mom whispering in her ear that she has to stay. Ugh, I wish Meri would get the courage up to leave! The other 3 have no self-esteem and won't ever leave.

    5. And you know she has her dumb mom whispering in her ear that she has to stay.
Sorry but I disagree. I don't think any of Kody's mothers in law (or his mother for that matter)are "dumb".

    6. Out of Kody's mother in laws, Meri's mom is his biggest cheerleader. On the show they said that if there was a problem in the marriage she would always advocate on behalf of Kody. It seems he can do no wrong in her eyes.

    7. random comment a propos mothers-in-law: this pin showed up on one of robyn's boards about a week ago: 'dear mother-in-law, i don't need you to teach me how to handle my children. i live with one of yours, and he needs a lot of improvement!'
might be nothing, might be passive aggression, i'm just telling you she posted it.

Funny....and hit the mark on all the insanity and all the retread, boring stuff !!!

Maybe even THEY are bored now, four years later.
And if they aren't, they sure as hell should be.
Or at least have a clue about how meaningless and unappealing they and their show are now.
That last picture of Sobbin and Miserable Meri perfectly captures the whole vibe and the lasting message of this family and this show.

CJ, you have such a wickedly good eye for the perfect pics

  7. Maybe all the wives and kids keep pretending that everything is peachy-keen because Kody would literally eviscerate them if they said anything otherwise. Since he is the "head" of the family, I'm sure he would perceive any sort of questioning on the part of the wives, or any statement that suggests that they are less than 1000% behind the plyg thing, as an act of war against him personally. When EVERYTHING in your life--your home, your church, your children, your car, your friends (such as they are), your "Brown Family Entertainment" payouts--can be taken away by the snap of the fingers of a fickle little troll, perhaps you don't get a say in how you act on TV. They all know that he can survive and do very nicely without any one of them, but they would be cast adrift and forced to start their entire lives over if he cast them out. It probably carries much more weight than we realize. And it would certainly keep any of the wives from expressing any emotion that isn't completely fake, if they wanted to tell the truth about their feelings for a change.

    1. Anon 7:17, we have seen in past segments how if one of the kids disagrees with him, he does snark at them. Remember when one of the boys said they had enough kids and hope that there aren't anymore and Kody said very snarky that he didn't get to decide how many kids that Kody has or something like that. While that isn't the worst thing Kody could say to his son, on national TV, it was embarrassing. He has also described his kids in a demeaning tone and with demeaning words such as calling the one boy a teen with raging hormones or one of the girls a wild child. I don't think the man or any of his wives take the time to think about anything. They are impulsive and that is seen with the way they flip and flop around from one bad idea to another and once they do pick an idea, none of them have the ability to reason what amount of work is required to make that idea a successful idea. Their impulsive and flippant way they handle the kids is equally disturbing. Kody reminds me of a guppy: a guppy breeds for the sake of breeding and spawning more guppies and will pair with one female and while breeding with the one guppy, if another female swims by, he will disengage to chase after the new female; guppies eat all the time and will even swim up to other fish and try and take the food right out of their mouth, and we have all seen how Kody is with food; guppies swim around aimlessly between sex and food and well Kody sleeps aimlessly between sex and food; male guppies gracefully wave their tales around in front of other fish and we have seen Kody wave his head around other humans. Guppy living in a fish tank; Kody living in the culdesac; same, same.

    4. Kody is like a dumb guppy. Guy doesn't know what he is doing and it shows with his family, everything looks like it is in chaos.

I hope there isn't a real dark side to Kody, but I have the feeling that there is. I think Christine got to see his dark side when she stopped having babies for him and was opposed to Robyn. I bet Robyn is seeing it right now and that's why she is not looking too happy. I feel terrible for the kids.

    5. Anon 8:26

I HATE guppies. When I was little I had a fishbowl with guppies. I thought they were so cool and loved their tiny, transparent coloring.
I remember when the female guppy was pregnant and being able to almost make out little baby fish through her scales. I rushed home from school the afternoon my mom said they babies would probably be born, and was horrified to see mommy and daddy guppy swallow up their babies.
My mom and I rushed to seperate the adults from their young, and to this day I can feel the revulsion coursing through me as I scooped up daddy guppy and his baby's tail peeked out of his mouth.
I NEVER ever had fish after that. To this day (24 years later) I refuse to even look at a fishtank. Kody being a guppy is equally the best and worst description I could imagine. He always comes first. How he appears is always priority, and everyone else is at risk of being nipped or devoured...the worst part is that I don't think he can help it any more than the fish can. It's his nature, and he probably thinks he is a fantastic father and husband.

I believe if Kody or any of the 'wives' were forced to see how their behavior affects their children, health, or happiness they would be absolutely destroyed. It seems very easy in their lifestyle to forgive bad behavior and choices just because they aren't as bad as Warren Jeffs or 'those other plygs'.
The comparison of their lifestyle to the dregs of polygamy are the reasons they were unable to make salient points or have an open discussion during the UNLV panel a few years ago. They cannot reconcile that being better than the worst doesn't equal being 'good'.

    1. She can, but she deserves more in her life than either sharing a husband with many other women and more than taking the all of the burdens of life onto her own shoulders alone. She seems like a creative, funny, smart and interesting young woman and she deserves to have an equally fantastic person to share her life with her. Life happens and you can't control everything, and I would hope and expect she would be able to "roll with the punches" and has many siblings who would help her if something happened and she had to raise children alone. But she's very young and I think it's sad to see her starting out with that as her first goal. Very sad.

      Delete
    2. I think there's a very strong possibility that Mykelti was/is angry at Kody, her mom and Robyn about being labeled as the bad seed and helping to break up her first relationship, so she said that to get back at them. Next to announcing she was gay or going to be a nun, that's probably the worst thing she could say.

      Delete
    3. Remember during Sobyn's purity speech? I swear Mykelti's dramatic reaction to it was all an act and she was secretly laughing at her "bonus" mom's stupidity. It is extremely telling that she said she doesn't want a husband. Mykelti, Hunter, and Maddie don't pull any punches and in my opinion you can tell they think Kody isn't that great of a husband or are that happy with their current situation.

They never should have labeled their kids the way they did, it isn't fair or nice. It's ironic that it has been Janelle' and Christine's kids who have all gotten the bad labels. No one has labeled Mariah the spoiled brat yet. At least not on the show.

    4. No one has labeled Mariah the spoiled brat yet. At least not on the show.
Actually I remember when Mariah was reprimanded by Meri. I don't remember the exact circumstances (maybe when Kody said Mariah couldn't go to church school anymore) but Mariah was being flippant to Kody and Meri told her softly but firmly "Show respect for your father."

    5. No, I don't remember that! Do you by chance remember what episode? I would love to see that. I do remember Kody telling Mariah to "be sweet" or something like that.

    6. Sorry I don't remember the episode. It was the first season in Lehi, though...

    7. It was the scene where Mariah was telling Kody she wanted to go to the Naval Academy and study to be a doctor. They were sitting in Meri's kitchen.

      Delete
    8. Season 1, Episode 5, Meri's 20th Anniversary.
Mariah wasn't being that flippant, she just failed to come up with a good reason of why she wanted to go back to her old school and ended up sort of rolling her eyes and sighing.
Meri said, 'Be respectful to your Dad, still.'
In Season 2, Episode 3, 'The Price of Polygamy', Janelle and Christine were going on about their eldest daughters always trying to get extra money from them. Meri said, 'I have one child. She gets whatever she wants whenever she wants it. (eye roll) That's such a lie.'
At that point, Kody became inconveniently honest. He admitted that the girls came to him for money when their mothers turned them down, going on to say, 'I have to say, Mariah doesn't pester me nearly as much as the other kids do.'
TLC being TLC, the interviewer didn't press them on this.
This is the closest the family have ever come to admitting that Mariah is treated like a princess and is a spoiled brat.

    12. oh lord, that was a convoluted mess. mariah was having her infamous tantrum in the car and being her usual all-round delightful self.
meri approached kody with the marvellous words, 'mariah's being weird again.'
kody offers to go talk to her and then there has to be a part of the conversation we are not privy to, because meri keeps wanting to talk to kody and he wants her to back off.
according to him, 'i didn't want meri making me upset with mariah.' the way i understand it, he wanted to be able to just talk to mariah, without bringing all of meri's baggage into the conversation.
in the couch segment, he helpfully elaborates, 'i cringe sometimes at meri and mariah's relationship. meri and mariah are very much alike and it can drive them both nuts.'
also, during his and meri's conversation, meri acknowledges that mariah is a lot like her and that she now understands what kody has had to deal with for the past two decades and change.

Thank you so much CJ for the excellent review! Makes my day!

I actually am proud of Janelle, even if her weight loss is going slow. I know how it is. The problem is she sees herself as a fat woman, and so subconsciously keeps herself that way. Procrastination is just a tool that mindset uses to fulfill the prophecy of "Maybe I'm just a fat woman so I shouldn't try". Even if she had lost 100 pounds in the last 2 years, unless her mindset shifts then she'd just gain it back, because in her mind she'd still be a "fat woman". The issues around her weight are all mired together with self esteem, marital, and life issues and it must be a dastardly tangle to unravel. I feel bad for her because unless she can find that inner voice that tells you "I can really do this and am worth it" then she is destined to fail, but I hope that is not the case. Anyway, rooting for you, Janelle!

On Robyn... I couldn't believe her tweet to Mykelti about how given her dream to have adopted children that she should "get a man in there somewhere". Just EW. Way to drag down an empowered teen girl and make her feel like she can't achieve her dreams without a man. Are we suddenly in the 50's again?? Goes to show Robyn's thinking. Latching onto a man is Priority #1 in life (or in Robyn speak, Pri-uridy #1).

    1. Diabolical Ponytail and Lobotomized,
Christine once said that she was just a single mother raising her kids alone. Her comment was during that time when she and the other wives were renting and were somewhat far away from each other and barely saw Kody. In fact, if one read between the lines in all of their comments, it seems as if Kody, during that time, was spending a lot of time with Robyn. She was the new wife and was pregnant and then had the baby and he said during one of the couch scenes that during a woman's pregnancy, he often spent more time with that wife and after the birth of a baby, he also tried to stay close to that wife's home. When he said that, Christine was fuming and I could sense that he didn't do that with her or at least with Truly. Also, if one reads between the line, one might ask, well, there were several times when your wives were pregnant about the same time and had infants around the same time so how did you choose which one to give that extra time and support to? My point is that Robyn, Christine, and Janelle are single parents. They have no benefits guaranteed to them should Kody die. Their kids, if he is on their birth certificate, would get social security but divide the amount he has for dependents (how much he earned and paid into social security) by all those kids and the single mothers would not get enough to support their families. Also, they discipline, teach, comfort, and all those parental things without a man there. In fact, when King Kody graces their doorsteps, I suspect it is much like all those stories that we have read in which the women were so miserable during the husband's absence that many times the children suffered the effects of the emotional roller coasters that their mothers were on and when the daddy did show up, the woman wanted to make everything perfect to keep him there: keep the kids quiet, serve the best food, don't worry him...you get the picture. With these families, it is obvious the games the women rely upon to get time with him and keep him at their homes. One may argue that I don't know this for a fact, but I do read between the lines. For instance, when Christine let Kody and the men have the love mat in the garage, she negotiated more Kody time for her and the kids. Here's a newsflash Christine, all of us boring mognomists who you look down on, we don't negotiate time with our spouses. We, unlike you, negotiate the time away from him. If I want a girls' night out, I tell my husband my planes and make sure they don't interrupt movie night or something like that. Our negotiations are for time away not time with. Anyway, all the wives are single parents. Even Meri had to deal with nights and days alone with Mariah. In fact, when Robyn came into the picture, she was interrupting Meri's nights by bringing her kids over to be with Kody when he was spending time with Meri. I imagine that is what started the problems with Meri and Robyn. you wait four or five or six days and you finally have your husband home and you and your husband and your daughter are sitting down to have family time and his girlfriend and her kids from another father show up...can you imagine. Anyway, I am very much in agreement with the idea that single women can raise wonderful children, same sex couples can raise beautiful children, and single men can raise wonderful children...plyg men are maximum inseminators and spend very little time raising wonderful children. That is all

    2. it seems as if Kody, during that time, was spending a lot of time with Robyn.
I also remember Kody saying either in a talking head or couch or voice over that he DID spend more time at Robyn's because she had just given birth and didn't have anyone to help her. I remembered it because I immediately thought about Christine before and after Truely was born where he spending a lot of time with Robyn because she was the newest wife. Christine didn't have any help except her daughters.

And then Taralyce was announced on the show as living with Robyn to help her out. What the heck?

    3. Anon 9:45 and CJ, nail on head. My first thought when Kody mentioned spending extra time with a pregnant/newly delivered wife was, yeah--how convenient. When Christine was IN LABOR he was doing giggly on-camera lip locks with his new toy.

It's like everything else in their universe: make it up as you go along. As soon as it comes out of your mouth, it becomes magically true, regardless of evidence to the contrary.

I think Robyn fully expected Meri to act like a grandma to her kids and even to Kody and herself, the new parents/couple. You know, helping out withthe kids so the new parents could have a little time to themselves. I don't think Meri agreed to that plan.

No, this was from Meri's section in their book 'Becoming Sister Wives'. This was when they first moved to Vegas, and a gut feeling tells me Meri no longer allows this to happen...

"Sometimes, when it’s Kody’s night at my house, Robyn and her kids will spend the evening with us, visiting or watching TV, or laughing at her little girls as they sing karaoke. I’ve never had to ask her to give Kody and me space ; she is so sensitive and aware of what I need that she’s always a step ahead. We have learned to respect each other’s marriages and, out of this, our own friendship has grown beyond strong."

    8. Yeah, I highly doubt Robyn is bringing her kids over to Meri's on her night with Kody anymore. Things seem a little icy this season between the 2 and we haven't heard how great their relationship is yet.

@Anon 9:45, you said it all perfectly for me, all of these women are single moms! I would in fact rather be a full time single parent then wait around 75% of the time for the king to come visit and make him comfortable. No thank you. It still makes more sense to me for Kody to spend time based off of how many of his kids are at one house. The kids are the ones who really get ripped off. How much would it suck for your dad to spend every fourth day with you when he is spending a whole day with his girlfriend and her 3 kids when you miss him?

    9. I just finished the book on kindle Becoming Sister Wives. It just left me with a bad feeling. Christine says in the book that their media and couch sessions were all about being a normal strong family and when it veered from that they were shocked that some of their issues made it into the show. I came away from reading it that Meri was aggressive and very opinionated.
Her treatment of Janelle was just sickening. It also left me thinking that she put the effort into bring Robyn into the family just to abuse her. Meri really does have a better then anyone else attitude.Their problems are deep and alot of resentment. It's a wonder the kids turned out the way they did.

    10. Anon 1:18, I totally agree that Robyn may have seen Meri as the grandmotherly type to her children. Even know, she continuously tries to guilt Meri into being more active in the child rearing of her and the other wives' kids. I think it shows her real motivation behind offering to birth a child for Meri: If Meri had a baby, she would be forced to be a part of the soccer mom crowd of being all tied down except when it comes to the kids. Now that Meri has found her freedom, I believe Robyn feels so betrayed that now she is tied down but her confidant isn't. Robyn has probably reared her ugly head to all the wives and, in fact, all the wives have probably said and done things that have hurt each other. So, tonight will be a total feast.

  10. I did not interpret Robyn's comment as suggesting Mykelti couldn't pursue those dreams without a man, I think she was suggesting that it would be better to include a man in those dreams. And I agree with her, it would be better. Mykelti's life as a grown up woman would be much better if she had a man as an adult life partner who would love her, cherish her, pursue those dreams in partnership with her, support her spirit and soul, support (or share with her the burden of supporting) her and her family and serve as a partner in parenting the children and providing them with a father figure in their home. And although the children Mykelti dreams of adopting (or those she might give birth to) would be blessed to have Mykelti as a full-time parent - they would be more blessed to have two parents loving them, guiding them and showing them an example of what it means to be a responsible adult man and woman. Can she pursue those dreams without a man to share them? Yes. And if there is no other option available, is it better than nothing for her and the children she dreams of? Sure. But is it the best option as a first choice? No, not for her as a woman and not for those children. Including a man as part of the first option in framing and pursuing those dreams does not in any way diminish the dreams nor does it in any way diminish or disempower Mykelti as a woman; including a man would only support and enrich those dreams for Mykelti and for the family she wants to build.

    1. Why only a man? I feel another woman can also provide the emotional, financial support and companionship as a man if she is so inclined.

Robyn's little dig and I see it as a dig against Mykelti just goes to show how mean and controlling she is. Why not let the girl live her life the way she wants to and love her unconditionally?

      Delete
    2. Because Mykelti has been shown by her scenes on the show and her public tweets to be interested in men. We're talking about Mykelti and she has not shown herself to be "so inclined."

I don't really like Robyn and find her completely annoying, but I don't in any way see her comment as mean or controlling. I think it came from a place of love and wanting the best for Mykelti.

      Delete
    3. I think Robyn's dig was to insert herself into the topic and to ingratiate herself to Kody. Neither daughter was really interested in marriage, and none of the children planned to follow polygamy. Both talked about their awesome childhood and their plans to be single mothers. They've marginalized or plan to eliminate the father/leader - Kody - role in their future. Robyn was probably trying to insert herself as a parent figure and defend Kody

      Delete
    4. I thinks Robyn's comment was a dig based on the wording ... something like "better get a man in there, Luv." I particularly think the use of the term Luv indicated a put-down. I don't see Luv as an endearment in this context.

      Delete
    5. like when Robyn uses the word sweetie. She use the word luv the same way. It's not coming from love, she's using it as a put down. A dig.

      Delete
    6. That's what I thought too. It's very affected. Not from affection.

      Delete
    7. Yea, that's true. The use of "luv" was a very condescending tone (pretty typical of Robyn). But I still think that in her own annoying way, she is saying it because she thinks it would be best for Mykelti. Although all of these wives have been living as "part-time" single moms because of Kody's absence from their lives day-to-day, Robyn actually was living as a single mom full-time for several years. Out of all of them, Robyn actually knows the pressures and pain and limitations of that lifestyle and would probably caution anyone actively seeking it instead of seeking a lifestyle with shared adult responsibility. I agree she was condescending and rude in the way she expressed it, but her point is still a good one.

    8. I wonder if Sobbin feels compelled at this point to jump in with short commentary whenever she can on twitter in order to justify (or clean up) her unfortunate habit she started when she was a complete newbie and couldn't stop over-speaking everyone else. Especially since she hogged the camera on issues which she wasn't even around for, and knew nothing about, except to parrot (and interrupt) the others.

Wouldn't you think by now she knows that her relentless lectures and insights are ripe snark food??

It was quite obvious that she had no script to follow in last week's episode when the other three wives were speaking of specifics about their older children. Even without a plot story on Mariah, Meri could contribute since she was definitely a participant during those other kids' early lives.
Sobbin looked none to happy to have to just sit there and content herself doing maintenance on her eyelash clumps. However, the absence of Sobbin wisdom was a nice vacation for the viewers. I know I enjoyed the no-Sobbin time.

    9. I think it is very telling that none of the girls shown seemed to desire a husband or needed one to fulfill their dreams. They have seen how much pain their dad has caused their moms and probably decided they could do without a man. We don't even hear about Mariah dating, and she's the one kid who wants to live polygamy.

As for Sobyn, who knows what she was really trying to say with her tweet, but we can be sure she was trying to include herself in something that has nothing to do with her. I bet all the older kids have no need for Sobyn or her advice.

      Delete
    10. I agree. I feel like it was pretty telling that the girls seemed uninterested in a 'husband experience' but still very much wanted children.
I think Aspyn has acted as a mother more often than we've seen, and knows that she would be capable. I might be projecting, but I felt like Mykelti was making a point (intentional or not) of how little a husband or father figure factored into her view of parenting and personal experience as a child.
I wonder is the parents even noticed, or if Robyn's commentary was as introspective as they get?

      Delete
    11. Last season, while the sister wives were dress shopping in San Francisco, the older daughters approached Kody in the neighbors' hot tub to ask if any boys had asked for them. They've shown a 180-degree turn in this last episode.

Also, in last week's episode, in all the couch episodes, the sister wives commented on the children before the mother did, and the sister wives had more comments. It was supposed to portray the unity of the entire family, but their comments sounded a bit aloof.

      Delete
    12. I agree that it's telling none of them is clearly stating they intend to live polygamy. They've each seen how their mom was treated and the pain/jealousy and "drama" (a term I recall them referencing during one of the coach interviews with the teens when they were asked about living polygamy themselves as adults), and none of them seem to be wanting to pursue it. Very telling indeed.

But I don't think I agree about the girls not showing a desire for a husband - except for Mykelti's recent statement, I don't recall any of them saying they didn't want a husband. Did I miss an interview? To my recollection, they've said they weren't focused on it or feeling pressure to get married right away. They've said they didn't want to live polygamy. And they've said they're focused on enjoying life and college and friends and aren't feeling pressure to have to date seriously and/or become sexually active right now. That doesn't translate to me as saying they don't want a husband. What did I miss?

      Delete
    13. @Anon 8:38, I don't think you missed anything. Just from my perspective it was interesting that none of the girls expressed marriage as part of their life goals when two of them clearly mentioned wanted kids. When I was 18, I definitely planned on marriage and kids and would have said so. I would not have mentioned wanting kids without marriage and I think that's what everyone is picking up on. It is particularly interesting to me because Aspyn used to specifically say she wanted to be a plural wife and has now changed.

  11. Mykelti could be gay and is afraid to tell her parents. I stopped watching the show. I only read this blog. I can imagine how boring this show has become. There is more excitement here than watching Kody parade on tv. How would the Browns handle having a child that is gay. I hope they would be accepting of their children's choices. I read an article today which mentioned how TLC is using tweets to give viewers what they want. I honestly believe that the Browns read this blog or someone at TLC does. I hope this is their final season on tv. They have moved so far off what this show was going to be about. It is not showing viewers how they live or teach about polygamy. It does not serve a purpose in my book. They are no longer relevant to their so called fans.

It was definitely refreshing to see the attention off of the klowns for a moment. How much of it was "real" who knows.

And Robyn's twitter pic of Kody changing sols diaper on the CARPET!? YUCK!!!!! The fact that she snapped a pic to share it with the world tells me that this is not a regular chore for Kody. Doesn't she know most monogamous husbands do this all of the time? It's bad enough they wear their shoes in the house. Nice "gem" Robyn but I'd have to seriously question it's authenticity.

    1. Kind of laughing here. I think "no shoes in the house" is a highly individual preference. In my world there are far fewer people who have a "no shoes" rule than those who don't care about shoes in the house.

I can snark on these goof-balls for donkey's years, but I don't find shoes in the house to be at all odd or snark-worthy. It's like discussing how often one showers or dusts or changes the sheets, IMO: different strokes.

    2. Anon 12:55p - I have to agree that I'm not sure wearing shoes inside equals a house ruined to the point it has to be "flipped" to sell it. 6. I think the unfortunate fashion choices of the wives is what makes the idea of them having a "fashion" boutique so laughable. But I respect the amount of work Robyn puts into her hair. I like curls, no matter how popular loose waves are. But I would love to see a makeover episode where they would learn how to dress modestly well. Layered, skin tight clothes is not a good look!

    7. Remember when Robyn was trying to make Janelle design a plus-sized clothing line? Janelle basically laughed in her face. I think the other 3 know they are less than fashionable. Poor Robyn doesn't get it. I do give her props because she looks like she tries with her hair and makeup. She actually used to dress fairly cute before she married Kody. She should go back to the polo t-shirts and capris.

That said, have you ever noticed her shoes? Ugh! I mean seriously! I guess the best one word description would be dowdy. At best. I think I've even seen her in black sandal type shoes with white socks. Tacky tacky. Now before I offend anyone, I am not against wearing comfy shoes. But if you are on national TV, you need to step up your game a little bit.

Especially if you are trying to sell fashion to the world (joory)

First, we get to see the REAL Robyn--that is, the Robyn we've all known was lurking under the mealy-mouthed facade. When she steps out of the RV into wind and blowing snow, she yells really loudly. Kody immediately says, in a stern voice, "We have neighbors," Robyn yells, "I don't give a shi...!" Of course, when re-writing history on the couch, she claims that she said, "I don't care!" Liar much?

And Kody gets shat upon. Seriously, shoe-splatteringly shat upon. Immediately he starts yammering blame at Hunter, but that's hard to pay attention to, because one is laughing so hard.

Well, we've been saying it for years: the show is a load of crap.

About Kody and Robyn talking about having more kids; it has been mentioned on a previous episode that the decision for more kids comes soley from the individual couples. I feel this is so unfair to the entire polygamous family unit. Of course the couples can decide yes or no, but if yes, shouldn't it then go on to be a consensus by the other wives as to whether more kids come into a family in which they ALL use their energy and financial resources to support? Just like when a new wife is being considered?

It just makes me wonder how the three wives who likely won't have more children feel about Fertile Mertle Robyn and Kody popping out more kids as they please, especially considering their obvious financial difficulties. It seems to selfish of "Krobyn" to decide to keep adding kids that the others wives must then work harder to help support and their having no say in it.

    1. It might seem like adding more wives, children etc are a group decision - but Kody has veto power & always gets his way. I call BS on Meri having any input on any of the "wife" choices. Janelle and Kody were "married" on Meri's birthday for god's sake!

  20. I also enjoyed the "vacation" from Robyn and also from Kody this episode... I still can't shake the feeling that Kody is in this lifestyle because he wanted to please his dad.. after all he did say on numerous occasions that his deceased brother Curtis was his dad's favorite and was upset he wasn't into polygamy ...... I also feel that those kids are glad to be in college and away from their parents and all those kids ... it seems to me that the Brown family is really 4 Brown families... not one big happy family as they say ....as for their jewelry business.. no one will give a rats ass about it when they are off the air ...... Can't wait to see what's in store for this road trip! ...

  24. The Grudge is a perfect moniker for Robyn!

When sisterwives first aired I really wanted to like this group. In the beginning I really enjoyed learning about their lives and see how a polygamist family lives day to day. They wanted to dispel all the rumors of abuses of the FLDS and how it is portrayed in the media to be accepted in society. I saw a somewhat well adjusted family that seemed to like each other with all the benefits of bonus children and an always ready helping hand with raising children. Things seemed okay in the beginning until the Robyn came along further disrupting an already emotionally and financially dysfunctional family.

Things didn’t get better with the move to Vegas. They whined and cried about having to live a few blocks away from each other. Their answer? Purchase $2 million in homes and whine and cry about every boring detail. Now that they have magically gotten these homes and live next door to each other they couldn’t possibly be more clueless and uninvolved with each other lives unless it involves planning a party. I wonder if TLC has put them on notice and that’s why they are all suddenly concerned with MSWC.

Any sympathy I had for them is gone. Their problems are all self chosen. They can’t be honest with each other let alone their audience. They don’t bother to make amends when they hurt each other. I am, however, sympathetic to the children. The youngest Browns are probably going to have problems when there is no money for them when they are older.

  25. The trip is going to be priceless. I wonder how they determine the sleeping arrangements? So, they are traveling in RVs but are they sleeping in RVs? If they are sleeping in RVS, does Kody and the wife whose turn it is to share his bed occupy one RV while all the other kids and wives occupy the other one? Or, do they check into hotels, and Kody moves from hotel room to hotel room. I wonder if he feels like a hooker? Maybe Robins fit about the cold was anger misplaced. Maybe she isn't getting her fair share of Kody time. It just seems so strange that four wives, one husband, and ton of kids would attempt traveling during the time when our area was having severe winter weather. Maybe TLC said to the film crew, get them in the worst possible light. You know, sort of like the way they did Kate. Anyway, they are way too weird.

  26. Ohhhh I can't wait to see that trip! The sewage moment & Robyn swearing were priceless (notice how on the couch all the other wives are pretty much laughing at Robyn?).

  28. I totally believe Hunter when he swears he replaced the hose valves correctly. Kody seems to be on the producers' shit list this season...literally, in this case.

  30. I think when they began their Sisterwife's Closet, it was a hobby business and Robyn and her fabulous sense of style were being indulged. But then came the failure of their LIV MLM and whatever else Kody has touched and turned to crap. Now it is all they have and has become all important. Suddenly the pressure is on Robyn to produce and she went into this for fun, not to carry the family on her back. I'm still trying to figure out why Janelle is wasting her time on the real estate gig. They must be in a panic over the dropping ratings.

Ain't that the truth? Kody has always been involved with MSWC, including demanding prices remain high on his "iconic" silver jewelry. And like you've said, every business enterprise Kody touches eventually goes bellyup. He's delusional thinking he has the Midas touch!

I'm still trying to figure out why Janelle is wasting her time on the real estate gig
My theory is Janelle knows Sister Wives show isn't going to last forever so she looked for a 'gig' she thought was a good match for her skillset. She hooked into real estate because of Mona the real estate lady and promises of making a lot of money I bet. Compared to the rest of the Brown adults, she has the best work ethic. Remember Kody and Christine were also supposed to be involved in real estate. Kody dropped out quickly when he realized he would have to WORK. Later on, Christine dropped out after passing her real estate exam when Mona broke it to her she'd have to work nights and weekends. Only Janelle stuck with it.

    2. The Kody Brown Family website looks different. Granted it was the first time i looked in a long while but it now has 4 houses on it kinda cartoon style. Just shove those houses they got down everyone's throat while poor mouthing over MSWC. Speaking og MSWC, off topic, i spoke with the owner's here in Scottsdale about the polygamist family using such a similar name on national TV. Their name is trade marked and they are not happy about it. Other customers in the store chimed into the conversation and knew who we were talking about. I think the owner was not quite aware of how familiar her customers were with the likeness of the names and how it was being used. Their concern over terms of use clause and anything being lifted from that are the focus.

  31. Kody thinks he has the Midas touch; he also thinks he has this surfer dude image; and he also thinks men look at him and go, dude, you the man. The reality is, as we have seen, quite the opposite. If the jewelry business were going well, he would not need to be begging the shows fans to buy the crap; and if he really looked like a surfer dude, well, you know he doesn't; and men are so not going dude you the man; most, in fact, are probably doing just the opposite. Kody's self image is antithetical to his real image: 1) is he a good father?; 2) does he have the Midas touch?; 3) is his image that of a surfer dude?; and 4) do men value Kody's life or do they think he is potent? Kody's emotional and intelligence IQ are not much higher than that of an adolescent. He is impulsive, abrasive, lacks reasoning, and thinks without consulting his grey matter or any of his brain matter. I cannot wait to see how he handles the raw sewage clean up. And, to be truthful, it couldn't have happened to a better guy.

    1. If the sewage caper is real (and we will never know if it was, or just yet another stunt to showcase Kody and the babes )......if it was real, you can bet that Kody didn't have to clean it up. Kody has been shown doing many things that he never really does. Like standing up on the second story of one of the houses, stringing lights for the Should-be Committed ceremony....Yeah, like our boy Kody really took care of that job. BS !!
The minute the camera was switched off, the real lighting crew took over.

As for the contents of that toilet on the ground, no doubt an emergency call went out courtesy of TLC to take care of it. Plus, renting an RV *should* have some stipulations about proper usage of the equipment, so someone may have to clean up more than just the sewage that sprayed on the ground. The RV itself probably was stinking too.

What makes me laugh is that this season on Honey Boo Boo, that classy family also traveled in a TLC provided RV, and they also had foul odor, porta-potty problems.
Looks like TLC has a thing lately for scripting and filming large groups of people crammed in an RV with toilets malfunctioning.....and calling it entertainment.
      TLC...The Learning Channel....!!!!! Really !!??

    2. I just spent about 15 minutes watching you tube videos on connecting rv sewer hose to rv park sewer.

I'm totally lost how this spill happened and I'm beginning to wonder if it was real or Memorex like you said, Amused. For one thing, it's not something one could do intuitively. You got to follow the directions, and it looks like there are a lot of instructions. And yes, if you don't do the job properly the RV (and surrounding areas) will begin to reek!

There is NO way Kody would be smart enough to read the directions.

Also, from what I watched, I don't understand why the grey and black water valves were left "open" to begin with. You open the valve to empty the tanks. When you're finished, you close the valve. So why did the crap flow out? Did Kody OPEN the valve before attaching the sewer hose? Or did Kody and adults drive across America dumping their crap along our highways because they left the black water valve open?

I now understand the humor from the movie Meet The Fockers now. When Robert DeNiro announced that passengers can only do number 1 in the RV bathroom - number 2 would have to wait for a rest stop, gas station or convenient bush along the way. I get the joke...

    3. "So why did the crap flow out? Did Kody OPEN the valve before attaching the sewer hose? Or did Kody and adults drive across America dumping their crap along our highways because they left the black water valve open?"

That's exactly right and is the point.
And we know that a logical explanation about how it could have happened will not be forthcoming. The whole scene will likely be all about Kody's angst, and watching him pissed off and strutting away.
When the Boo Boos has their similar mishap, it was all about the family vividly discussing how bad the RV smelled.

    4. I don't watch HBB but I thought that the Browns are going for the ick factor. What else do they have really? It's all about them making fools of themselves for dramatic purposes.

      Delete
    5. To be frank, with all the bodies in those homes, and with the self indulgent and often times totally diva acting, I cannot see the Browns using the RV as anything but a large taxi. How do I add a name?

      Delete
    6. Well, if they're going for the "ick factor" -- then, mission accomplished! They acheived that particular success with the very first thought of them all sharing Kody's little dipstick four years ago!

Having him drenched in crap is quite the metaphor, eh?

  32. quick pinterest update (i swear, i have a life, though it may not seem like it): robyn is newly obsessed with vera bradley bags. i'm not familiar with the brand, but here is what she has to say (i hope it's ok to post this verbatim, but her pinterest is public after all):

'I am falling in love with Vera Bradley. I bought this one for myself and bought one for my mom for Mother's Day and one for Janelle and Mykelti for their birthday. I hear they last for years and are machine washable. I am loving all the different prints. I took mine to Atlanta on a work trip and I had alot of compliments and it was very functional.'

also, she has a samsung steam washer and dryer, which i presume is a recent purchase as it only showed up on her 'dreams that came true' board today.

aaaaand an update on my own life. it's been ten days since i started my 5k journey and i'll be running the second workout of week three tomorrow. while i still don't enjoy running, i still go most days rather than every other day and when i run in the morning, i sometimes feel the desire to run again in the evening. i'm so slow it's practically slo-mo, but i understand that speed is secondary at this point. i can now run three minutes at a time several times (that sounds so pathetic, but it's what the app tells me to do) and while i puff a little, i don't fall over dead. also, so far, my joints are ok. as i'm somewhat overweight (a bit heavier than meri was in season 1, i should think), i was warned about hurting my knees, but i hope to not cause more harm than good.

thinking about this, though, i don't understand how janelle could even consider running. at her weight, i would recommend swimming or some sort of aquatic aerobics (infinitely preferable, if you ask me, but our pool sprung a leak and i like working towards a definite goal). i have a friend who is around janelle's weight and even though she is only 20, she recently developed sciatica and joint problems so bad that she needs opiates just to function. i don't want her to feel bad about herself, so i don't tell her to lose weight, i just tell her to deal with her stress levels and am still trying to talk her into aqua-biking. i've never tried it myself, but i think it might be an idea for janelle as well. trainer sean and his weird obsession with motivational speeches and ignoring the scale need to go.

My guess would be Janelle run/walks these 5ks. I would think with adequate cross training she should be able to avoid injury. Trainer Sean should know all about it right ;)

Im a slow runner as well.

  33. Just mentioned on the last thread but it bears repeating:
The show Sister Wives REALLY sucks, but this blog makes it hurt less!! I am always an episode away from tuning out. Thanks CJ for giving us a place to snark and read your spot on commentary.

TLC should be grateful to this blog, it keeps many of us watching. Without it, the show is just not worth it.
